Progressive Global Perspective
Many things divide humanity. Diverse life chances, levels of development, religious beliefs, ethnic differences, national boundaries. Our world seems to be coloured more by the conflicts that differences create than by our common humanity.
Yet many things do also bind us together. Each of us is genetically unique but we all share 99.9 per cent of the common human genome. We all have the same human rights, are equal before one another, in theory at least. All of us depend on the delicate balance of life on Earth, the only place in the Universe thus far where we know we can survive. There are few powerful symbols that unite us. Perhaps one of the most famous is the familiar image of our home planet viewed from the surface of the Moon, hanging in space, blue-green and fragile.
We need more ways to recognise the fundamental truth that humanity is one, that we stand or fall together. Symbols can help galvanise people to action, to improve our management of the world and to help our chances of survival. A couple of ideas for such projects are listed below.
